Getting to Xalapa and Moving Around

Most visitors fly into Veracruz International Airport (VER) on the coast, then take the ADO bus or a private car for the 1.5 hour drive up to Xalapa. El Lencero (XAL) is the local airport but has very limited domestic flights.

ADO runs comfortable buses from Mexico City’s TAPO station to Xalapa’s CAXA terminal every 30 minutes. The ride takes about 5 hours and tickets run 500 to 700 pesos. ADO GL and ADO Platino offer wider seats for about 150 pesos more.

Inside the city, urbano minibuses cost 9 pesos and cover every neighborhood. Taxis de sitio at designated stands are safer than hailing one on the street. Uber and DiDi both operate in Xalapa and are the easiest option at night.

Driving into the Zona Centro is tough because streets are narrow and one-way. If you rent a car, choose a hotel with its own parking or plan to leave the car at a pensioned lot for 150 pesos a day.

Neighborhoods and Where They Sit

Zona Centro covers Parque Juarez, the Cathedral, and most of the walkable sights. Stay here if you want to leave the car at the hotel and walk everywhere.

Las Animas sits on the east side near Plaza Crystal and Plaza Americas malls. It is quieter, newer, and popular with business travelers who want modern hotels with good parking.

Xallitic is the old indigenous barrio just north of the Cathedral. It has the famous washing fountains and some of the best pan de muerto bakeries in the city.

El Dique is built around a lake and park on the south side. Families like it because the lake walk is safe and the air is cleaner than the center.

Coapexpan sits on the southern edge near the Museo de Antropologia. It is residential and quiet, good for longer stays and for travelers with a car.

What a Stay Typically Costs

Budget rooms in the Zona Centro start around 600 pesos a night. Mid-range hotels with breakfast and parking sit between 1,100 and 1,800 pesos. Boutique stays near Parque Juarez go from 2,000 pesos upward.

Prices rise during Cumbre Tajin in late March, Holy Week, and the July coffee festival in nearby Coatepec. Book two to three weeks ahead for those windows.

The shoulder months of May, June, September, and October tend to have the best rates. Midweek stays are often 20 percent cheaper than weekend nights at the same hotel.

Day Trips You Can Base Out Of

From the Zona Centro you can reach Coatepec in 25 minutes for coffee, Xico and the Texolo waterfall in 45 minutes, and Naolinco for leather and mole in about an hour.

Minibuses to Coatepec and Xico leave from Los Sauces terminal every 15 minutes and cost 25 pesos. It is simpler to base yourself in Xalapa than to stay in the smaller towns overnight.

For the coast, ADO runs hourly buses to Veracruz port in 1.5 hours. A round trip with a stop for seafood at La Parroquia is doable in a single day.

Choosing a Property at Hotel Imperial

Hotel Imperial sits right on Parque Juarez with rooms that look out over the plaza and the cathedral spires. The location means you can walk to the museum bus, the ADO airport shuttle, and every cafe on Callejon Diamante.

Rooms include fast wifi and secure on-site parking, which is rare in the centro. Ask about the plaza-view rooms when you book because they go first.
