Coatepec for the Coffee Day Trip
Coatepec sits 15 km southwest of Xalapa and is Mexico’s original Pueblo Magico for coffee. Minibuses leave from Los Sauces terminal every 15 minutes and the ride takes 25 minutes.
Cafe Catedral and Cafe Bola de Oro both roast on site and pour single origin from local fincas. Expect to pay 45 to 70 pesos for a cappuccino.
The old beneficio Finca El Quelite offers tours in English on Saturdays at 11 a.m. Tickets are 250 pesos and include a tasting of four roasts.
Stop for lunch at Casa Real del Cafe on the main plaza. Their chiles en nogada from August through October run 220 pesos and pair well with a local cold brew.
Xico and the Texolo Waterfall
Xico is 20 minutes past Coatepec. The cobbled main street is lined with mole shops selling the town’s signature seven-chili sauce for around 180 pesos a kilo.
Texolo waterfall is a 20-minute walk from Xico’s plaza. The trail drops 80 meters into a canyon and the main fall is 40 meters tall. Entry is 20 pesos.
Go on a weekday morning to avoid weekend crowds and bring sturdy shoes because the stone steps get slick after afternoon rain.
Naolinco for Leather and Mole
Naolinco is an hour north of Xalapa and is known for hand-stitched leather shoes and chicken with mole verde. The drive climbs to 1,600 meters through coffee and avocado country.
Over 40 family workshops line the main street. Custom boots start at 1,500 pesos and are usually ready in two weeks.
Restaurant Los Magueyes serves the town’s classic mole verde with rice and tortillas for about 160 pesos. Open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
El Tajin for the Archaeology
El Tajin is 2.5 hours north in Papantla and is Mexico’s best Totonac site. The Pyramid of the Niches has 365 niches, one for each day of the year.
The site is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and entry is 85 pesos. Voladores perform their rope descent ceremony outside the gate every hour.
It is a long day trip from Xalapa. Leave by 7 a.m. and plan to return after dark, or stay overnight in Papantla.
Veracruz Port for Seafood and Sea Air
Veracruz port sits at the end of a 1.5-hour ADO ride. The malecon and San Juan de Ulua fort can be covered in an afternoon.
Cafe La Parroquia has been pouring lechero coffee at the port since 1808. A plate of huachinango a la veracruzana runs around 290 pesos at nearby Gran Cafe de la Parroquia.
