The Main Airport: Veracruz International Airport (VER)

Veracruz International Airport, officially called Aeropuerto Internacional Heriberto Jara Corona and also known as El Llave, is the closest major airport to Xalapa. It is located about 85 km from the city, and the drive takes approximately 90 minutes depending on traffic. The airport has domestic connections to Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and other Mexican cities, as well as some international routes.

Option 1: ADO Bus (Recommended)

ADO is Mexico’s main intercity bus company and operates a direct service from Veracruz Airport to Xalapa’s central bus terminal (CAXA). Buses run approximately every two hours starting around 8:00 AM, with the last departure around 11:00 PM. The journey takes around 90 minutes. Tickets cost approximately 200-350 MXN (roughly $10-18 USD) and can be purchased at the airport. This is the most affordable and reliable option for most travelers.

Option 2: Taxi or Private Transfer

Official airport taxis are available just outside arrivals at Veracruz Airport. Always use the authorized taxi stand inside the airport rather than accepting rides from individuals outside. The fare to Xalapa varies but typically ranges from 700 to 1,200 MXN ($35-60 USD) depending on the service. Private transfers can also be arranged in advance online for fixed pricing and greater convenience, especially if you are arriving late at night or traveling with a group.

Option 3: Rental Car

Several major car rental companies operate at Veracruz Airport, including Hertz, Avis, and Budget. Renting a car gives you flexibility to explore the surrounding region, including Xico, Coatepec, and Hacienda El Lencero, without relying on taxis or buses. The drive from the airport to Xalapa follows the MEX-140 highway and is generally straightforward. Note that driving at night in Mexico is generally not recommended for unfamiliar routes.

Coming from Mexico City (AICM or AIFA)

If you are flying into Mexico City, the journey to Xalapa is significantly longer. The most common approach is to take an ADO bus from the TAPO (Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Oriente) bus terminal in Mexico City, which takes approximately 4-5 hours and costs around 400-600 MXN. There are also direct buses from the airport terminal at AICM. Plan your connections carefully to avoid arriving in Xalapa late at night.

Xalapa’s Own Airport

Xalapa has its own small airport, Aeropuerto Internacional El Lencero (JAL), located about 15 minutes from the city center. However, flight options here are very limited, and most travelers will find it more practical to fly into Veracruz. Check current routes before planning around Xalapa’s airport.

Book Your Hotel Before You Arrive

Hotel Imperial is centrally located in Xalapa, making it easy to reach from CAXA bus terminal by taxi or Uber. Lock in your room before you travel so you have one less thing to arrange on arrival.
